I have a 519 in my car, what gear ratios would this transaxle most likely have?

Does it have four letters cast into the case like BBAB or BBBC? If yes, from that you can decode the gear ratios originally installed.

I will look for the letters, where would I find this info? I'm suprised the numbers would be cast in, as these started as vw castings

Information on the 519 transaxle can be found in the 1954 Porsche Service Manual, page R1:
Code:

gear   ratio     teeth g1    teeth g2

1st   1:3.182     11      35
2nd   1:1.765     17      30
3rd   1:1.130     23      26
4th   1:0.815     27      22

Rev  1:3.56

This was standard for coupes and cabs. Closer ratio gears were standard on Speedsters and available to racers.

What year is your car? Is the transaxle ribbed or a smooth-case?

It's very greasy but the numbers I've found so far are 3887, it's stamped on both case halves, one is near the starter pad and the other is on the rib on the bottom of the trans. Is this a serial number?

And here is a pic of the vent near the starter

Yes, that's the serial number. That's the reinforced (ribbed) case version of the 519, used from mid-1954 onward. Based on the serial number, I would think it was on a car built in late '54?

The 1954 shop manual states on page D3:

"Rear axle drive ratio
1.4.375 or 1.4.428"

On page R2 it states:
"Crown wheel and pinion gear 1.4.375 (8:35) i.e. 1.4.428 (7.3)."

I hope that helps. Tom
