Found this in my travels around Panama out in the interior. I hadn't seen one and thought I'd post it to see what you guys think.

Very Happy I'm not sure I'd drive anything called a "Gurgel".

Heh.. Know what you mean. It seems it's Brazilian design that uses the engine and suspension of VW and a tube frame. Found some pictures online. I hadn't seen one before nor heard of it till now. Interesting stuff.

Here we have another "exotic rarity" of Volkswagen: Rolling Eyes

It's called "SAFARI" and was produced in Denmark (Europe) and is also a cousinship of the Brazilian "GURGEL".

"GURGEL" also produced these very nice Karmann Ghia pedal-cars for children:

The Gurgel you posted is an X12. Gurgel is a company in Brazil who makes vehicles for domestic consumption. They are 2wd although some prototype 4WD were floated around. There was an X15 for sale in the classifieds that was located in Switzerland. That one is forward control like a VW bus.

They were successful commercially in Brazil because of protective tariffs of about 30% imposed on imported vehicles. There is an active Gurgel enthusiast club on Facebook. I've got the moderator on my "friend list". The only thing is they mostly chat in Portuguese. Using a translator can make reading cumbersome.

I have a Gurgel X-12 TR 1987.

I can help you if you need it.

The Gurgel X-12 is a brazilian coachbuilt made between 70's and 90's.

Its body was built in fiberglass with Typ 1 powertrain but it didn't use the VW chassi. The X-12's chassi was a steel tubular connected to the fiberglass body through a process called Plasteel that connects both forming a monoblock set.

The front axle was the of the VW beetle but the rear suspension used coil springs.

Built like a little off-road, the X-12 was mounted with mixed-use tires and a selective lock system of wheels for avoid jams in the mud.

My Gurgel X-12, the one of this photo, is a TR version, with rigid roof, tuned in the VEB style. The VEB (Velha Escola Brasileira or Brazilian Old School) style is a way of tuning that only use brazilian accessories and techniques used in the 60's and 70's by brazilians tuners.

You can see more about this Gurgel X-12 and the VEB style in https://www.facebook.com/mafia.boxer
