I have a 1976 Beetle with a motor that is stock appearing and has the engine number AH007420. Two different web sites say this is either a 1974 or a 1971 motor. I need a new muffler - the pipes and the heat boxes all look good, it is just where the inlet goes into the muffler, it is rotted off at the muffler. I tried to weld it, but the muffler is too thin for my welding skills. My problem is which OEM style replacement muffler do I get? The engine does have two downward slanted tubes going from the intake to the tin which I suspect then goes to the muffler to heat the intake. Am I better off replacing the entire system since heat here in FL is not a big deal, or can someone tell me what Bosal part number I need/

Thanks - I have always had Corvettes in the past, the VW is new to me, but a lot of fun-- and cheaper than the vettes!

Take a pic of your engine compartment showing the overall motor and then the heat risers....
Also a pic underneath where you say it is rusted.

Does your intake look like this at each end of the heat risers?

I have tried for the last hour to figure out how to post pictures, but I either do not understand, or this is just beyond my computer skill level. A bit maddening. I have managed to get photos of my motor and exhaust into this "gallery" under my log in name and under the heading of Bug - Super Beetle - 74 exhaust - rusted part - Fraud Dog - today at 1139 am.

I have no clue how to get them from there to here, but perhaps some great person could go to the photos and tell me what muffler I need to get the exhaust working again.

ps. I someone could give me some simple instructions on how to upload photos into a reply or a post I'd appreciate that too. Right now I am too frustrated to work on the bug today. @#$$%^&!! computers.

In the gallery click on the photo then look for "forum code", copy and paste that into the body of your message.

It looks like you have a stock style muffler with a stock style intake manifold.

So you can fit whatever muffler you want in there but I would suggest replacing it with a stock style muffler as it will have your heat risers.

The only reason to deviate from stock would be if you're doing a more powerful build or putting in dual carbs.

You'd done the hard work, the rest is easy. Just go to the photos you up-loaded and at the top of the page there are two fields, one with a link, the other with the forum code. Just copy the forum code and paste it into your post.

As for a which muffler you need, and AH motor is a 1600 from a '73-'74 so your would need this.
