My father picked up this '67 Kombi as a project car. This is our first VW ever, but something we always wanted to do. Its a very dry bus. Someone gave it an awful blue spray job at some point. It came with a 1600dp from BAP, a used Type III IRS, it has the 6 pop outs, and most everything but rear seat frames. It was loaded with a totally junk westy cabinet and pads.

We really dont know what road we are taking with this bus yet. We got it mostly stripped this last weekend, one ugly dent behind the cargo doors and the rear corners were a little wrinkly with plenty of bondo. The only rust were a few small pin holes in the drivers door at the bottom, just behind the bulkhead, and of course the battery tray.

My vote is to bring her back to Pearl White on Pearl White and do a bus like this one, but without deluxe trim and on steelies, maybe BRM's down the road.

Thats pretty cool. It looks really solid. A great way to start, especially with the idiot guide on the front seat.

Where did you find it?

we've been cruising thesamba for a while, found it in the classifieds and it was quickly in the driveway.

color choices are:
Pearl on Pearl
Dove Blue on Pearl
Turkis on Pearl
Dove Blue mixed a little greyer on Pearl.

is a type III irs different from a bug irs?
are back seats really so hard to find?

Not so much back seats. Middle seats are harder to find.

Post some pics of that "junk" cabinet. That may be something someone really needs or wants. In addition, this being your first VW, are you sure it is a T3 IRS and not a T3 swing axle to lower the bus.

I don't think so. I would like to see the trans to see if it is just a CV repair or if someone welded a straight axle to CV's. If it came with a T3 IRS trans it is probably jsut a repair. Anyone?

the bus had a quick jaunt on the freeway. its was about 105* in Phoenix that day. the temp went up some and oil pressure dropped a little about 5 min after getting on the I-10. it hadnt done this on surface streets and hasn't done it since. no tach and the speedo is out, so no idea what she was running at when it happened.

all that aweful baked primer is off. there were a few hidden little surprises, but overall is a pretty straight bus. there is still a lot of flaky ugly blue inside that needs stripped.

finally got the engine out after busting off the pressed in nut on the top left mount. tranny is leaking more oil everyday. it definitely needs to come out.

the front seat frames are repainted, repadded and recovered.

there are two little tabs on the intake manifold. instead of capping them, the PO smashed them with pliers or something. any recommendations on how to take care of these? cut them down and rubber cap?

You could go single with port heads and manifold.

Better with low end torque in a bus with a stock 1600.

If they are not sealed by the smashing - Capping them off should be fine I think.

Your front seats look great.
