Could be one of several things:

1. Car was special ordered with the "gas saver" engine.
2. Car was originally built as a 1500E and destined for Canada
3. Car represents a new wrinkle that we don't know about.

Pinwheel drums? Unusual on this late of an example. Wonder if a PO swapped them out sometime in the past because he couldn't find the stock bits. Personally, I've never seen an N with pinwheels. I've never seen a post 1963 with pinwheels, either, and IIRC the parts book shows a definite chassis break for them.

We do know that German car makers had a confusing habit of using up old stock for Home Market cars. Hard to imagine well over a year after the fact, though.

But weren't all engine compartments for '64/'65 the same (wider for twin carb engine) regardless of which engine the car got? Seems counterintuitive for VW to continue to stamp two different engine bays.

Que Paso?

Yeah but this doesn't matter Pedro. A side draft fits just fine in an S engine bay. Im pretty sure his body is all S as Ive seen it in person several times.

missing the point here and to be more specific
im very interested to see the wiring
if they REALLY use a single draft wiring wish is totally different length coil wire
Oh SORRY we ALL knew that too :)

I go for #3
because #1 and #2 would be printed as a NOTE :)

When it comes to most any but the major details, I've found these "Zertifikats" to be quite lax on specifics, frankly... for example one day they know what a specific M Code was, the next, they seemingly do not.

In this case, I doubt that VW produced two wiring harnesses because of coil position; they would design one harness capable of both. When they started offering Automatic with electronic AAR in '70, all wiring harnesses had the red wire for electronic AAR- the manual cars simply had em snipped off at the end of the engine bundle.

When they went to FI- same thing. There's a legend floating around that there a FI and non FI wiring harness. There isn't. The FI harness and relay assembly is a little add on that runs front to rear and hooks on to a tab at the fuse block. I should know; I added a stock factory E system to a 65 1500 Notch a few years ago (you saw and maybe drove it) and needed to perform absolutely zero butchery to the wiring... same with adding in the four way flasher with lighted knob.

VW harnesses are actually designed such that it appears they were thinking several years- in the case of the Notch 8 years- in advance. It all went in, works fine, looks bone stock with proper color coding. You just need to know which wiring diagrams you need to look at... in his case '65 S plus '73.

Got some new eye candy. Found a Tourister 2 in really nice shape and the same owner had the square box with the hard to find tools in it. So I made a combo deal

So I just noticed something about the generic square box - at first I thought it was missing tools, like most of us think. I dont think it is. At first after I received it I noticed the picture of the tools in the missing section were of painted or "black" tools like in a standard tool kit. Not shinny Hazet ones. Then I looked at the brochure where the box is new and it doesn't have tools in it. Right?

So it was meant to be empty so you put your already supplied standard tools in it. Sorry I never noticed that.

I would be interested in joining the 1500 club or at least getting info into returning my car to stock specs

Sure. We can pick your car apart on the thread you started.

Nice tool sets.

Seeing the correct VW tools in the kit is nice.

Growing up I would use my Dad's tools and several of the tools shown in the VW tool kit my Dad had loose in a toolbox that he let us kids use.

I still have our family's 65 Bug they bought new and I actually found all the VW tools in my Dad's tool boxes and I put them back in the VW's tool wrap.

Funny thing is there seems to be a few extras each of the pliers, different screw drivers, wrenches, and those funky metal tubes for larger nuts/leverage(?).
He must have picked up at least one of these VW tool kits or some incomplete sets when he put a VW tool kit together for me years ago.

Maybe I will find a funny round tool box in the attic some day that goes with the tools.

I wanted to follow up on my Tire Opinions post from a few months ago.

I finally got the nicely powder coated Type 3 wheels and they look great.

After looking at all the suggested tires and looking more closely at my notchbacks tires and noticing that only the spare is a Continental and its running tires are different, I think I finally made a decision.

The Coker 165-R15 BF Goodwrench whitewall is the one I like.
This tire's white wall stripe is close to the wheel and I like that look over the whitewall being more in the center.

Here is a link to the tires I think I am going to get.
