I know that sound all too well. its the noise air makes when passing thru shroud at the very bottom of the fan. there is a flat metal piece and on some aftermarket shrouds the distance is too close, making air whistle as it passes thru. we actually used to bent that area closer to make that sound (hey.... we were 16) don't judge me, lol

love my fan whine. No other car on the road sounds like a Bug fan whine.

It does sound like a supercharger.

Get more shims, if you take the ones from the pulley it won't have enough and will fail

is the nut holding the fan on standard thread or reversed? I can't get the damn thing off!

Not IIRC, just on there tight, 45ft.lbs.

Factory specs for factory fan, backing plate, and shroud is 2mm clearance between fan and backing plate. You'll have to use your judgment when dealing with aftermarket shroud. You may be able to get away with a 10th of an inch.

Don't have a 1/2" impact?

theDrew Sat Jun 11, 2016 12:11 pm

I was trying to get the alternator out without pulling the shroud, so my impact doesn't fit back there. It's awkward so I just can't get much of a purchase on it. I'll give it another go later today

butter fly impact...or air rat shit....or breaker bar.all seem to work good, or possiably a battery operated impact like the oned used for construction&screwing

LOL, always wondered how that sound was made..... VW friend of mine
in the early 90's, his sounded the same, we always wondered how his
fan made that sound...... :D

well I picked up a butteryfly impact and I still can't make it fit back there.

Any other tricks? I'm really trying to avoid pulling the shroud as all my EFI stuff has to shuffled around and is a pain (wayyyyyy tooo complicated :))

drumbum68 Wed Jun 15, 2016 5:21 pm

Some wrenches replace gen. stand studs with bolts for this very reason.

Can you do some finageling, like lifting shroud slightly to get alternator and fan out of shroud?

I just pull the engine........I know not fun with duals and full body.

I think I remember having to yank decklid and mounts to get clearance.....a long time ago.................memory fades..................what was I saying?

So...what do I shim the fan with?

What guidance did he give you regarding which way to go, closer to the backing plate or closer to the front hole in the fan shroud?

when you see where the paint is rubbed off you'll know.

nick wharton2 Thu Jun 16, 2016 4:00 pm

Have you tried to push the shroud back and forth while running to see if the noise changes?

  In my case I know the fan is not rubbing, been through that before and am familiar with the noise. Curious what the OP finds as his solution weather it is in the setup or the fan itself. :)

theDrew Tue Jun 21, 2016 5:03 am

Lame. I took the whole thing apart, shimmed it and it still sounds the same.

Any other ideas?!

It's the shroud, not the fan clearance with shims..... I wish I had
your fan shroud

theDrew Thu Jun 23, 2016 9:20 am

so if I wanted to get rid of this noise......what do I do to the shroud without compromising cooling? (if even possible)
