Hi
I'm active in the vanagon forum. Am on a road trip in US. My alternator is starting to make intermittent noise.
At oreillys schucks pep boys napa etc are the rebuilt Bosch alternators generally a good bet in terms of quality?
Or is there another brand that's better?
This is for an ABA 2.0 OBD1 engine in m 81 westfalia.
Apologies for not searching first.
Thanks,
Neil. |

My guess is they are all supplied from the same rebuilder. Most will have some sort of warranty, pick the best one or best price. |

The parts game is pretty thick with different brand names
Napa wanted about $233 for a Bosch reman.
That seems pricy to me but then I don't think I've bought a reman alt. before
Hard to believe ! |

NAPA is almost always the priciest, no matter what it is. They seem to think whatever they sell is worth a lot more than the same item someplace else. |

I had a chance to search more. Rock auto and bus depot show similar prices for the 90 amp Bosch reman. |

I have to wonder what is meant by "Bosch" in some of the offerings.
Maybe a lot like "German" on the parts box. Lol.
Part of the challenge is that if the reman part fails while I'm back home in Canada, it'd be tough to collect on the warranty

Hi all.
So I pulled a good looking Bosch alternator from a 2001 new beetle at a pick and pull. From an AEG engine.
Internet info indicates that I should connect the L wire to existing blue D+ wire.
True?
Haven't sixed it up but ilooks like it'll fit.
Thanks.

So just to report back. The AEG engine alternator fit but the L wire didn't seem to work when connected to the vehicle D+ My battery isolators clacked on/off and the red alt. light did same. I know This was a fairly foolish type of repair to try while on a road trip. Thankfully, nothing electrical appears to be damaged.
Bottom line, it sounds like my coolant pump is worn. The noise most certainly is coming from the pump.
Thanks for the help
