In May of 2011, I spent 3 weeks on the Greek island of Samos. Besides doing the typical tourist stuff, VW hunting was a high priority. I didn't find anything old, mostly 70s stuff.
But the sad thing was how they started disappearing while I was there. My friend and I found a late 70s Bay abandoned on the side of the main road. A few days before, I found 2 Beetles in a field along with about 10 other dead cars. We planned to check out the Bay the next day, and when we got there, it was gone! Further down the same road, all of those dead field cars were gone too.
There were 3-4 guys at the edge of the field, so my Greek speaking friend went to ask what happened to the cars. That's when it got ugly. They said the Greek gov't has decided to clean up the islands, so they brought a mobile crusher onto the island and were going around and collecting up all the abandoned cars. We never did see that mythical beast, only the vacuum it left.
After leaving the island of Samos, I went to the village of Ermione on the Pelopenese to look for this Kubel:

The guy who took the first pic was not a VW person, but he thought it was the same as his friend's Type 181, so he forwarded the photo. I talked to the 181 owner and he relayed to me the exact location of this car. His info was fairly fresh, only 10 months old. I went there and found nothing. I have since determined I walked along the road not more than 50-75m away. This car was also disappeared.

I bet that's what happened to your BD SC on Rhodes.

Sad but it is true.

Most of the old cars that are abandoned outside of the big cities was recycled
directly by third party companies who have no idea of their value...
In Athens for example we have some volunteers that they are checking daily all the recycling yards and they have save a large number of vehicles from the crusher...

Also hard times in Greece right now. So everyone is weighing there scrap for cash. I only just got to the 51 in time as he was about to weigh that in with the old cans.

Interesting to hear that there is also official interst to remove these abandoned cars. does anybody have an idea what happend to that Kübelwagen that was spotted in Kefalonia? I am sure there is still some good stuff out...
