That sentence could hide a multitude of sins couldn't it? :) No disrespect meant to the person in Durant of course, but a pessimist could turn it into a multiple choice question with several great answer choices:
1. My 412 ran when parked:
a. but wouldn't shift out of first.
b. but wouldn't idle worth a ****.
c. but was uncontrollable over 50 mph.
d. All of the above.

Always nice to see someone looking to get into the 411/412.

Sadly....you will probably have to take whatever color of "driver" you find. These cars were never produced in numbers even remotely plentiful enough to allow searching for one by color...unlike a bus, bug or type 3....or for that matter even a ghia.

If you pass up driveable cars of the model you want (either 411, 412, and two door, four door or wagon).....a decade can pass before you might come across one that matches model and color. They are getting less every year.

All of that aside....be careful of the term "driver". If all you are looking for is one that is driveable to get it home to work on it...its doable. Its more probable that what you find will just be a "roller"...wheels and suspension complete enough to put on a trailer or tow.

Few if any of these cars will be in condition to warrant as a daily driver without work being done on the suspension as a minimum.... to keep from destroying parts you simply cannot find.

There is a ton of information here about the bare minimum needed to be done...just because of age alone....to allow daily driving or even moderate driving but not daily.
Unless you find an owner who has done some serious work to the suspension...meaning struts, strut bearings, idler arm bushing, rebuild or replace or rebuild the centerlink...and has good ball joints...you have work to do before it will be a driver.

Have fun! Let us know if we can help! Ray

Saw this today
1973 Volkswagen 412 Type 4 412,Type 4
California Original, 1973 VW 412 (Type 4) Runs Great! Restored, California Car!

Interesting.....the link goes to nothing...but the term..."restored"......

It looks fabulous....but....outside of a handful of people here and on the STF....its doubtful that 99.99% of ACVW enthusiasts would even know what it takes to restore a 411 or 412....much less the fact that there are no parts to buy for restoring one.

The paint is definitely a non-stock color ...and the 412 never came with low back seats.

Also....its a 1974...not a 1973....and lists a 1795 engine (1.8L)...which did not come in the cars with the factory four speed like this one...so its been transplanted.

Dash recovered....which actually looks decent....and at least the guy is fairly honest....but....no seat belts, no horn and no side mirrors...front seats are from type 3 or beetle......and a horrendous two barrel centermount carb....but overall they did a nice job.

Search for it with this item number on ebay and it fulls up a whole list of pictures and what has been done Item # 401299750483

Hopefully they have just taken the headrests off. Thanks for posting it. Ray

Are you saying this link doesn't work for you?

Thats very odd....it does now. Yesterday it took me to a totally different page...not ebay...and stated "what you are looking for cannot be found".

Also...my anti-virus software pings every time I click on that link and says "this site has malicious software" outbound...domain caliautobrokers.com

I used the item number yesterday and simply went to ebay to search in chrome.

Its interesting....the bid is up to $4750 today with 18 bids.

On one hand...I hope that in general type 4 cars start getting some love value wise....on the other hand....if that car goes for about $6,000....I hope the new owner is very type 4 educated or its going to be a painful ownership.

I can pretty much tell you that to drive one of those....reliably....its going to need a fairly immediate 1.5K put into the suspension and brakes. Ray

It went for $5100....not bad! It will be interesting to see if whoever is teh new owner...shows up in the forums either here or on the STF for advice and help. They will need it!

1974 412 auto

1974 injected auto 412 shows 46k. Complete car, motor cranks over free. I do mean complete. It is missing nothing that I know of, all the tins, everything is still on the motor. Previous owner claims trans was replaced six months before the injection quit and it was parked.

I had a set of snowflakes with brand new tires, I made them fit on ebay adapters. I also have the OE wheels and caps, they go with the car.

Car is actually better than it looks, it's damn solid underneath. It is a barn car for sure, it has had some critters living in it, but much of the interior is very decent. Front bumper is NFG, as pictured, otherwise not much is screwed up or missing. Hatch, doors, trunk all open and close and line up. Front struts are newer replacements and clearly incorrect, the front sits too high.

Clear title. as is where is. Rare car. Not an awful project. Just not in the cards for me right now.

Very nice looking car...and no...sadly...that is exactly how the front ends sit on these cars. The strut springs cause full extension all the time. It was a bit of a design flaw ...anticipating that you would be using the cavernous trunk to carry things in.

Its doubtful the struts are recent. They have not been manufactured since July of 1999...when KYB..the last mfg of them quit producing them.

And...NOS replacement strut cartridges on the shelf....are 100% dead by 10 years ago. They do not last on the shelf. Typically installing them...they work poorly from the get go if they do not just puke out their type seals.

There are a few answers for struts....the occasional batch of new build Konis that show up....or just do the Audi 4000 strut mod listed here.

Are those 14" wheels? Ray

On one hand.....its pretty complete and comes with spare parts. The price......is not bad.....but the sloppiness of the primer in the front trunk.......it makes me wonder what "ills" were plastered over with the paint.....probably bondo......probably the normal rust issues in the sills and the front fenders.
