Endicott jb wrote: If they are gonna advertise those busses as restored, the least they could have done was put correct engines in them. I could be wrong but a 63/64 bus should have a 1200 engine not a 1600. And a 56 sc should have a 36 horse. And on top of that, the bus should not be carpeted. but, it does say the bus is "custom."
A 1963/64 USA Deluxe would most likely have a 1500cc engine.

Although it was an option in those years, it seems like most US-delivered Deluxe buses got it.

Results (so far):

14 1974 VOLKSWAGEN THING CONVETIBLE - $8250
29 1979 VOLKSWAGEN BEETLE CONVERTIBLE - $11,000
29.1 1974 VOLKSWAGEN THING CONVERTIBLE - $7290
31 1962 VOLKSWAGEN BEETLE 2 DOOR SEDAN - $11,000
56 1956 VOLKSWAGEN PICKUP - $22,550
56.1 1964 VOLKSWAGEN BEETLE CUSTOM CONVERTIBLE - $13,200

That SC looked real sweet but it looked like they "smoothed over" the inside of the gates then added matching slats to them. Interesting.

Of course, Mike Joy had something stupid to say as always. I like jotting down all incorrect bs that comes out of his mouth while watching these auctions.

Don't suppose anyone recorded Speed's coverage of these, did they? I turned it on and lot 67 was already up.

The cosigner of the Bugatti bought the Samba for 100K tonight  He went from the fastest car to the slowest.
The winner of the Bugatti got cold feet and backed out so Jackson bought it for the 700K it won for. Anyone see all this?

At least he won't have to pay the high buyer's fee!

dubstar Sat Sep 25, 2010 6:33 pm

the door handles are installed upside down on the single cab, correct?

Russ Wolfe Sat Sep 25, 2010 7:12 pm

Details, details, details.

Those buyers do not know the difference.

I didn't know the 21 window came in onyx black & white. Looks sweet nice combo with the red wheels, 100K.

Yes. The door panels should have pockets too, the front seat is the wrong seat for a '56, and so on...

That is a lot of money for a 21-Window...

I can't see it being worth that but I have not seen it in person.

VW knew better than to try to paint a bus black.

The same way VW people know not to pay $110k for a non pressed bumper bus.

Just hearing "1963 21 window" should throw a red flag...

Barrett-Jackson has a knack for separating successful people from their money :D

Most VW people will not pay much for anything
Better to sell in an enviroment of money, impulse and emotion.

Look like you double-posted it in the Gallery and one got deleted as a duplicate. I updated the post above to show the picture that is still there.

I was in Vegas and was excited to see the Volkswagens at the Barrett- Jackson auction. My brother in law and I spent about 5-6 hours and we were both very disappointed at the quality of the restorations. Cars i got to see up close in the waiting/staging area were the 74 orange thing, 56 oval w/ trailer, 66 seafoam bug, 71 superbeetle, 63 black/white bus, all had plenty of flaws that were obvious to me with only fair/average knowledge. Paint jobs were weak, lots of cheap repop parts, almost none of the cool rare accessories whether stock or aftermarket that are all over VW specific shows. The cars at B-J looked assembled in a hurry and not by VW people. Every VW show i have ever been to have all had loads of much better cars. Not a good place to see or buy nice VWs.

What did you expect, its always that way at most auctions with niche cars, the muscle cars are a little different being there were alot of variables, and hot rods its just overall quality that counts, I was there as well, and looked at all the VW's to the layman and collector they looked great, to the purist they were all wrong, but since its the layman and the collectors that have the money and are willing to pay up to beat the other guy out, thats why they did what they did, and will continue to do so everytime theres one there, its just the way it is

Classiccarguy, It was a first experience attending an auction and I expected the VW's to be as nice as the muscle cars which looked amazing. Your right...I met the guy who bought the 56 oval, he bought it because he remembered a guy in high school that had one. He peppered us with questions about his car for 20 minutes. I knew alot more about that car than he did and ive never owned a bug, im a ghia guy. He definatly had much more money than VW knowledge. Interesting experience.

at first glance the VW's looked good, but as you started looking at them you can see the good and bad, overall they looked generally good for most people, but serious vw guys (and gals) will spot the bad ones 100 feet away and did!, i met a few vw guys that looked at them pretty hard, didnt get any names, just in quick passing looking at cars, and they noticed they were not as correct as need be, maybe sometime in the future they will go full circle and end up in a true vw lovers garage and can get corrected!!! :D

I kinda got a vibe the announcers were making fun of VW's alittle bit when they said how much the 21W went for and then they all chuckled and said something about hippies wondering where they left their buses or something. Did you noticed how they never show VW's on TV? There was that one part with the 21W for like 10 seconds and that was it... they didnt even bother to show the bidding or any other VW's.
