Easy 100k.

Only 8 valves even though its got 4 cams.

swanlakers Thu Jan 31, 2008 4:24 pm

that 550 engine also has 8 sparkplugs

The 550 engines were in the 550 spyder - same car James Dean died in -hence nostalgia out the wazoo

Porsche 4 cam engines were also used in the Carrera in the 1950s. They are pretty much useless below 5000rpm but could spin up to 8000. They also only produced around 130hp-150hp.

By todays standard type 1 hipo, not much.

Glenn, that is the 2nd Beetle I've ever seen with that remarkable engine- generically called the "Fuhrmann" engine after the Porsche engineer Ernst Fuhrmann who designed it in the early 50's. The one you show is from a Porsche collector in OR, based on an article in the "356 Registry" newsletter that I get from another friend regularly. The other Beetle was in the Collier Museum in Naples FL 20 years ago- a mouse grey OVAL with the 180hp version engine from a Porsche-Elva or such. The car was on display but you could tell the engine was not in the car at the time. Collier Bros. had Troutman-Barnes in LA fabricate alu fenders, running boards and even bumpers, I think, for that Oval to reduce weight. Car on display had excellent bodywork and was totally stock looking except for the same chromie 356 wheels as in the car you showed.

Such an engine would make the Beetle (or Ghia) "sick" fast! Yes, modern aftermarket VW parts are available for a skilled engine builder to reach the same output with much easier maintenance and at most 1/10 of the cost...

Quiet VW muffler? I suppose a good stock German muffler (Leistritz or Eberspaecher are good brands) with German tips (eliminates that wheezy whistling sound) is not what you want? 1 3/8" header with a hide-away muffler that tucks up in the right rear wheelwell (for a Beetle; seems not to be readily available for a Ghia) is even quieter than a single QP muffler. Smooth running- new sparkplugs and ignition wires, good distributor (does not need to be hi-po, just good stock one properly timed), clean carb. Also to prevent the engine from rocking back and forth at idle- new German rubber engine mounts. I'm always impressed by stock engines at VW shows that idle so steady they seem to be standing still.

The 2 liter 4 cam engine made 180hp. When was the last time you saw a VW engine of that size that made that much hp?

Roland, there's a 67 Beetle in Seattle with a 4 cam engine in it. The owner is not involved in the VW scene, so not many have seen it. The organizer of the annual Vintage show in Seattle convinced him to bring it out in about 91 or 92. It too had an altered deck lid.

its a loud car. its just what it is.

it will always have that "clockwork" like sound when it runs, its just a aircooled thing.

kinda cool too

That is a 2L that makes 180hp at a much lower rpm, on pump gas, for a street car, not race car...

Take care,

You've missed my point.
There aren't many 2 liter engines built today that make 180hp, and today's engines have the benefit of 40 more years of development.

Old thread....

But I would like to know the difference of these motors. Super 90 vs VW then.

Did Porsche use VW parts and build their own? How is the super 90 not a VW?

A porsche motor used porsche parts also the Super 90 was around 90hp. The VW motor back in late 60's and into 70's made an advertised 60hp. The only similarity is air cooled.

Is it the same case? Heads? Etc..just made by Porsche?.Or is everything different?

Any pictures of the super 90?

Also back in the day the pan is different?

My friend has a original 62 356 and it looks exact type 1 motor and pan...

Not sure of the exact dates, but early 50's Porsche (pre-A) and VW used some of the same engine/transmission parts.
