Picture of spark plug in a head honeybus
Here is a picture of how the spark plug sits in the head. It seems to be out of reach of a valve and of any vlave seats.

Smashed spark plug tip honeybus
This spark plug came out of #2 cylinder in a 2 liter FI 1976 VW bus engine. Previously, all 4 cylinders were about 160 -165 psi, but this cylinder now reads just 60 psi. Now the rest of the story...
A few months back I noticed some severe rapping from the engine when I 'accelerated' onto a freeway ramp (10-20 mph) and it sounded like a valve came loose!! I immediately lost passing power, and I limped home 6 miles at about 45 mph on a 50 mph road. When I got home, I tried to locate the noise, but no success. I pulled all four rocker assemblies and all of the valve stems seemed to be sitting level. I then 'tried' to adjust the valves, and I think I got it right (My other experience with VW buses is with hydraulic valves, so I am a real novice at adjusting valves)
I left the '76 VW bus in the driveway, and as time passed, the noise disappeared. Recently I took it out for a short drive to church, and it still seemed to really lack power. When I got home from church, I discovered that #2 was not contributing at all.
After I pulled the #2 plug, I discovered this damage. I checked compression, and where I would expect to see a 160 psi, I only got 60 psi. Apparently, even with a new plug, the #2 cylinder is not contributing.
When I first got this '76 VW bus, I noticed a lack of power; I had only 2 of the 4 cylinders contributing - two of the fuel injectors were not firing, but I got 35 mph out of it. And now with 3 of 4, I am seeing 45-50 mph, but no passing or hill cclimbing power.
OK, no more noise from the engine, but I ask, what could have caused the spark plug to get crushed and moved off center like that. I can't imagine a valve seat getting to that spark plug (that was my first thought. Valve seat dropped and then reset itself), nor a dropped valve. Could I have broken a compression ring and it worked itself out the exhaust but I still have some mesurable psi compression??

Rare Empi sender DannyZ
Heres a peice I like alot and don't see often. Its an original Empi sender for the Empi gauge package. This mounts on the engine and another sending unit can be added. My friend had this in his tool box a few years ago and showed it to me. He said its not for sale. I offered him $100 and guess who owns it now. When someone says thats not for sale and you want it offer some $$ you never know. That sticker is an old school sticker from the Heinz Jung Empi collection. Its addressed to Heinz from Empi. Note the Treuhaft and Mr Bug along with the Empi. Thanks Dave View other images: From DannyZ Search Forums for photo

Original Empi license plate DannyZ
Check it out. A new item for the collection. I found this at Madera. This guy selling parts in the swap meet had this original license plate. This is 1970 and on plate for California. I bought something from him very early. I asked if he had anything Empi and he said no. I few trips later this license plate was on the roof of his truck. I asked how much and paid his price. I now own it. Thanks Gary View other images: From DannyZ Search Forums for photo
