VW Type 3 Parts Rebuilding - Wide Variety   Price: Varies
-
I can rebuild many VW Type 3 parts; the first photo shows just a few examples. These prices are for VW Type 3 parts ONLY. In some cases I can do the same work on other models, but the price will be higher if I have to make a special purchase of parts to do the work. I have a VERY large stock of new and used Type 3 parts which I can use to replace missing or broken items on the parts you send me for rebuilding.

I have added some photos of SOME of the tools and fixtures I use when rebuilding various components. Everything shown here is something I've personally made or modified for this particular use. These are not for sale, but are shown to give you some idea of what I've done to make these jobs easier, and, in some cases, possible. Some tools may not be used on every job, but may be needed in certain cases.

In many cases, rebuilding your OG parts yields a better part than what's available new these days. This is often because the correct part is NLA, and new parts are actually Beetle parts, which are often close, but differ in important details.

Brake calipers, basic charge $60 for one, $55 each for two or more
_pads and missing hardware are extra
_freeing up frozen bleeder valves may cost extra.
_removing broken bleeder valves costs extra, a lot extra.

Type 3 front wheel cylinders (2 per wheel!) $25 for one, $20 each for 2 or more
-freeing frozen pistons adds to this price

Rear wheel cylinders: I recommend that you do those yourself, right on the car, but if you insist, I'll do them for $20 each.

Single circuit 19 mm master cylinders, $45
Single circuit 20 mm master cylinders, $55
ATe 19 mm tandem master cylinders, $55
FAG 19 mm tandem master cylinders, $65

D-Jetronic FI electric fuel pumps, $100 or $165, depending on the problem (inquire)

Recalibrate '68-9 & '72-3 FI Pressure Sensors, $50
Recalibrate '70-1 FI Pressure Sensors, $75

Repair Odometers that no longer turn over, $60
_add $5 if the trip odometer knob is chrome plated metal

Clocks, pre-71, with white plastic rear cover, $35
Clocks, late, with steel rear cover, I can try....

Refinish instrument bezels, black or grey, $75/set of 3
_only with repair of both odometer and clock

Distributors, most Type 3 versions, $65 plus any major parts
Reset D-jet trigger points, $5 (included in dizzy rebuild!)

Gas gauge senders, $40

Gas tank "overflow" hose and vent repair kits, $30 - $38, see below!

I can match locksets, or supply complete matched sets, price varies, contact me
I can rebuild generators and starters, but the shipping costs usually make this unreasonable

I can have sleeves installed in badly pitted master cylinders that would otherwise be impossible to replace. This makes your MC better than new, but this adds ~$145 to the price of a rebuild.

The items above are just a few examples of work I can do. If you have other needs, email me. These are functional rebuilds only, not cosmetic restorations.

Note: The prices above are for rebuilding/repairing components which have been in recent use. If you send me parts which have been been out of service or in poor storage for many years, there may be an extra charge for the extra work that those parts sometimes require. I'm completely willing to try to put such parts back on the road, but I can't afford to spend the extra hour or so on these for free. I'm sorry to have to do this, but I've just been getting too many such parts recently.

If you mail me parts to be repaired, PLEASE include a note giving your real name, email address, mailing address, the symptoms of the problem you are having, and what you want me to do. The best and easiest way to do this is to include a copy of an email we've exchanged. Feel free to scribble some notes on that same piece of paper. You'd be amazed at how many people send me parts, with no note, no name, unhelpful return address, and no help on how to contact them or what they want done. Keep in mind that you're not the only person I've been emailing.

Finally, a note on getting your parts rebuilt. If you have more than one unit, feel free to send 2 or more along with a note telling me how many good rebuilt units you need back. I can often mix and match good parts to make the good units you need, but here are my terms: If you send a unit that I don't need to touch, I'll send it back with the rebuilt units at no extra charge. If I have to take it apart and clean it up, to harvest parts to complete the repairs on one of your other units, you only pay for the completed units you get back, but I get to keep the remaining parts unless you want to pay me for the time I've spent on the extra core. That often gives me spare parts which I can use to keep other cars on the road. Think of it as a donation to the Type 3 community, as well a partial payment for my time.

If you send me a unit that turns out to be broken in a way I can't fix, there's no charge if you let me keep it for parts. As above, that pays me for the time I spent getting it apart and figuring out what the problem was, while costing you nothing. If you prefer, you still have the option to get your parts back for the cost of the time I have invested in it.

I've developed kits to replace the '68-'73 Type 3 fuel filler "overflow" hose. This replacement will last much longer than the original part. It is EXTREMELY important that this hose be fixed if it is cracked. Cracked overflow hoses let gas out and, more importantly, they let water and dirt in. The price for this kit is $30 for '68-9, $38 for '70 and early '71, and $35 for late '71-73, including shipping. The '70-'73 groups includes extra parts to replace the gas tank vent system on those cars. For '68s, send me your VIN; for '71s, tell me whether the small hard line across the top rear of your trunk is plastic or metal.

I have a HUGE stash of NOS and used VW Type 3 parts available and I keep my prices extremely reasonable. If you need something that no one else has, email me. Sorry, but I don't have bumpers or front fenders.

Prices do not include shipping, unless otherwise specified.

I've been working on Type 3s for over 50 years and have decades of experience with these cars. Feel free to email me your questions, or, better yet, send your question to the Type 3 email list. The Type 3 email list is free and totally non-commercial. If you're a Type 3 owner/enthusiast go to www.vwtype3.org/list for info on how to join.

thanks,
